New York ended the year 2022 on a high note by banning toxic PFAS chemicals in apparel and carpets

Just before the new year, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law a bill restricting the use of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS, in apparel. The bill will eliminate the use of PFAS in apparel by Dec. 31, 2023. Governor Hochul also signed a bill banning PFAS in carpets as part of a mandate requiring manufacturers to implement a carpet collection program.

New York is now the second state to enact a ban on PFAS in apparel after Governor Gavin Newsom signed similar legislation into California law this past September. Many clothing brands and manufacturers have already eliminated or have committed to eliminate these toxic chemicals from their products. New York and California’s actions, especially given the size of their respective economies, will have ripple effects across the country and supply chains.

We join our New York allies at Clean + Healthy and the JustGreen Partnership in applauding Governor Kathy Hochul for signing the bill into law. Read more here.
